Shaping State Education: Free Education to World War II

Interpretation Strategy and short animated film

The Storyline

In 1873 the most significant change in education was implemented and attending school became free, non-secular and compulsory. The next milestone occurred after Federation in 1901 when Education appointed its first Director, Frank Tate. Teaching underwent considerable changes including initiating independent 'kindergartens', changes in building design and training for teachers in new disciplines.

The Commissions

The Bastow Institute of Educational Leadership commissioned an interpretation strategy that would pick up on the story of Henry Bastow, first architect to the Education Department in 1873 and continue exploring the role that architecture played in teaching and learning.

Creative Hat Interpretation

The strategy led to CHI devising, scripting and producing a short film. With Reel Pictures and Mal Padgett Multimedia (also known as: "those two guys in Footscray").
